  • What do you think of when you think of the word “health” or “healthy”?

Health isn’t the absence of disease, it’s the presence of vitality.

  • How did you first get to know about juicing?

When I was newly diagnosed with cancer I was looking for healthy ways to support my immune system and overall well-being. Juicing was a big part of that.

  • Could you share with us your favorite recipe or juice combination? Why is it your favorite, and did you feel any change from it?

I don’t have a favorite per se, but I do love any juice with cucumber! It’s so hydrating and refreshing. For example, the combination of cucumber, watermelon and mint makes a terrific mocktail any time of the year.

  • Is there a specific reason you became interested in having a healthier lifestyle? Is there anything else you do, other than juicing, to support this healthy lifestyle?

I practice what I call the 5 pillars of wellness, being mindful about what you’re eating, drinking, thinking and how you’re resting and renewing. These pillars rest on a strong foundation of stress management. Together, they support what’s known as an anti-inflammatory lifestyle––something we should all strive for.

  • How did you first find out about Hurom?

I bought my first Hurom juicer over a decade ago! I was looking for a juicer that could extract the most nutrients and the highest volume of liquid from my fruits and vegetables and Hurom did that and more.

  • If there is one fruit or vegetable you would absolutely recommend juicing, what would it be? Anything specific to your local region?

I loved that you mentioned exploring fruits and vegetables that are local to your reason, not only can they be fresher, your purchase supports local farmers. For example, I love going to my local apple orchard in the fall. Juicing apples, cucumbers, greens (kale or spinach) and adding a dash of cinnamon is almost like having a much healthier apple pie in a glass!

  • Do you recommend juicing to vegetarians/vegans? Do you think it would help those trying to ease their way into vegetarianism or veganism?

Juicing comes with many benefits. Juices give your digestive system a rest by removing most of the fiber (which takes a lot of energy to digest). Since your body works hard on your behalf 24/7, it’s nice to give it some R&R. That’s not to say that you should avoid fiber—it’s very important for you. But if you’re upgrading your overall diet to include more plant-based, whole foods, you’ll likely be getting plenty of it. Juicing is also a great option for folks whose digestive systems are too sensitive to handle lots of fiber, or for those getting used to a plant-rich diet. If that’s you, juicing ensures you can enjoy the benefits of lots of awesome produce without suffering any tummy troubles for your efforts. For people focused on healing or repair in general, low-glycemic juices can offer maximum health benefits in a gentle, easy-to-digest, easy-to-assimilate form. To ensure your green juices aren’t too high in fruity sugar, I recommend aiming for three servings of veggies for every one serving of fruit. Or replace fruit with some lemon, lime, ginger, or carrots to add tangy sweetness to your drinks. The lower the sugar, the more effective the green juice can be at boosting your immune system and fighting inflammation.
