In 2021, researchers at Peking University in Beijing observed 143 pairs of identical twins and uncovered a remarkable finding. Even with identical genetics, individuals can experience biological aging at different rates. In other words, the “biological aging clock” does not move at the same pace for everyone.

What, then, is the key to achieving slower aging—something long considered a universal aspiration?

 

Same Genes, Different Aging Speeds

The researchers evaluated each participant’s health using four lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and fruit and vegetable intake. (Each factor was scored on a scale of 0 to 4.)

Fruits and Vegetables Slow the Body’s “Cellular Clock”

The study found that individuals who consumed at least 400g of fruits and vegetables daily showed slower biological aging compared to those who did not.
In fact, the difference reached up to 1.7 years.

Phytonutrients such as antioxidants, polyphenols, and carotenoids are believed to help reduce DNA damage and oxidative stress, while supporting more stable epigenetic patterns.

In other words, “eating fruits and vegetables can actually help slow the aging process.” This is no longer just a belief—it is increasingly supported by scientific evidence.

This study delivers a clear message: Aging is not determined by genetics alone.

Even with identical DNA, the pace of cellular aging can vary depending on how we live.

The findings showed that higher fruit and vegetable intake was associated with significantly longer telomere length.

Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. While they naturally shorten with age, they are also influenced by lifestyle factors such as stress, smoking, and diet. Shorter telomeres are associated with a higher risk of disease and accelerated aging.

 

Just 100g More Per Day Makes a Difference

Increasing daily fruit and vegetable intake by 100g was associated with a reduction in biological aging by approximately 1.7 to 1.9 years.

In practical terms, something as simple as adding half an apple or a small salad each day could contribute to nearly two years of slower aging.

 

The Highest Intake Group Looked Significantly Younger

Individuals in the top 25% for fruit and vegetable intake showed about 4.4 years less cellular aging compared to those in the bottom 25%. 

More than four years of difference—achieved through diet alone.

Consistently consuming 400g of fruits and vegetables could help you appear up to 6.8 years younger—a powerful shift toward slower aging.
